Wow! I’ve just known that Electrical Engineering ITB ’81 has many great people inside! Especially great people on Information Technology! I felt rather shocked because all of them are young lecturers and researchers I admire for their intelligence and spirit!
Consider these names (correct me if I’m wrong, I apologize for any inaccuracy):
- Bambang Riyanto -great AI figure
- Onno W. Purbo – great IT figure
- Budi Rahardjo – great IT figure (considered the best in information system security technology)
- Armein Z.R. Langi – great Rural Communication figure, director of a research center in ITB
- Suhono Harso Supangkat – Indonesia’s Ministry of Information and Communication Technology Expert Staff
- Adi Indrayanto – great Neural Networks figure
Great, huh? Wow! I don’t know how it could be. Many great people comes from the same educational background from the same year. I can’t imagine the atmosphere when they studied back then. It could be so great to meet intelligent people every day back then. I felt so fascinated when I first read about these facts!
Well, maybe the greatness could be explained by one of them’s saying that said that at their times, that year’s students competed pridely with each other so hard that they never took the opportunity to cheat. It is shameful for them to cheat. Instead they struggled so hard. Pushing their limitations so hard so that they could overcome the others.
Hmmm, if I may compare their life back then with nowadays’ life, well, I feel ashamed of my year… Seems like the aura of competition and the ‘ITB-ean’ pride has gone,,
In my own year, it seems the world has turned upside down. What good becomes bad, what bad becomes good. In my year, cheating has become a COOL TREND!…
It seems so weird, but many people in my year acts like a hero, a great man who’s done something great and cool, acts like a superstar when they passed an exam without studying,, and sadly most of them are my best buddies…… And most of them told me that we who refuses to cheat are just simply stupid because everybody does it. Seems like there’s an opinion that we won’t become great people if we don’t cheat now. They always tell me that every Indonesian bureaucrate cheats. If they don’t, they will just become nothing….
I don’t know, maybe it’s just like what they said. Things change. What has become a pride becomes stupidity now. I don’t know. Maybe? But I don’t know what will happen to us when we graduates if we continue like this. Can we become what Indonesian people demand from ITB? A trouble-solver, not a trouble-maker?
I remember an old sayings that said that, “The lion only has it’s pride. If he lose it, he’ll become indifferent with a long-haired cat…”
They said that we (ITB people) were the people’s best hope. The people awaits our intelligent brains and skillful hands. But now we have lost our pride,,, the thing that differs us from the others,,, so how can they tell that we’re different from other people? If the best of us has been taken, how can we make something good?….
Well, I couldn’t write more. So many things I want to say. So many that they overload my head and just get stuck there and won’t come out. But, that’s all I want to say…
